On The Job.
This is where i work as a Forklift & Crane Operator. Our Cold Storage is one of the biggest Freezer's in North America. That can hold over 3000 Tons.
We mostly store Shrimp here in our Cold Storage.
This is the Ocean Prawns in with another load of Shrimp. She can carry over 750 tons and makes 8 to 10 trips a year.
As the loads come off the boat they have to be wrapped before the forklift can take them across the dock to the freezer.
The forklift taking the load to the freezer.
The last load coming out of the front hatch.
The boys are hooking up the chains to take our forklift off.
There she is after 28 hours of work to unload 750 tons.
Heres a picture of the Ocean Prawns back out on the fishing grounds.
This is the Atlantic Enterprise another one of our biggest ships. She can carry over 750 tons and makes 8 to 10 trips a year also.
The men working in the hole of the Atlantic Enterprise.
It takes about 30 hours to unload this boat.
The last load waiting to be hooked up on the kickins to be sent ashore.
This is the Arctic Endurance she can carry 500 tons and takes about 24 hours to unload.
When the shrimp come off the boat they have to be sorted by size before they are shipped.
When it is sorted the forklift takes the loads to the wrapper to be weigh, tallyed and wrapped, then it goes in the freezer.
One way of shipping the shrimp is by truck.
Here are the boys loading the container on the truck.
The tally man blowing out the dirt as there doing the truck.
She is almost done.
When the truck is finished it will go to a container ship in St.Johns or Argentia. Then it will be shipped to Europe.
Another way we ship is by Cargo Ship.
The forklift's load the cargo aboard by a ramp. Then they lay the load on a elavador that takes the load to the hole.
Then in the hold another forklift takes the load and stacks it in tell the hole is full.
Then when the hole is full the crane closes the hatch and the ship is on her way to Europe.
We also have a Electric Jack Cart to help with the unloading of boats.
This is 5kg boxes of cooked shrimp.
This is 20kg boxes of raw shrimp.
Sometimes if the crane is not working on the ship we have to use a Shore Crane to unload the boat with.
Taking the plywood off that we use to haul the Jack Cart over.
As you can see when all the shrimp is off the boat there is hour or two to clean up.
The building next to the freezer is for packaging room and Work Shop for doing repairs on forklifts, jackcarts and kickins.
The boys are cleaning up the sorting area,to get ready for the next boat.
This is one of the bigger forklifts that we use.We use this lift to load the racks in the freezer. This lift is over 12000lbs and can lift loads 4 stories high.
The next few pictures are of the racks in the freezer where the shrimp is stored until shipping.
This picture is took looking down from the main road at the freezer.
This is the Katsashuk II,she can carry 350 or more tons and it thats about 18 to 20 hours to unload.
The Workers are starting to unload the back hatch of the Katsashuk.
Once they dig down so far they lay down plywood to haul the jackcart over so they don't damage the boxes.
Then they load the boxes on to a pallet.
Then it is hauled out under the hatch to be sent off.
This is the Otto, she can carry 300 or more tons and it takes about 30 hours to unload because she has only one hatch.
This is the Andvari, she can carry 140 or more tons and it takes 15 hours to unload.
This is a picture i took today(Feb,26,2006)of the freezer and it looks like there is 3 boats in.I took this picture from in front of my house.
I would like to thank Tony Galway for alot of these pictures.
Here is a picture of the old plant where i worked. As you can see they were starting to fill in for the new freezer where i work now.
They tore the most of this down because of the closure of the Cod Fishery. Many,Many jobs were lost ,what a shame.
This is a look at the Fish Plant Wharf,Fishermens Wharf and the Marine Complex.
Here is a look at the north side of Harbour Grace. There are a few changes now because this picture is a good few years old.
